First Mixed Media Project: Thank You Gift Tag

Mixed Media is something new that I discovered among papercrafters. It is a new technique that I would like to explore and learn.

According to Wikipedia, Mixed Media is a work of visual art that combines various traditionally distinct visual art media. In other word, mixed media is an art work that made by more than one medium.

But Mixed Media Artwork is not the same with Multimedia Art. For example, a work on canvas that combines paint, ink, and collage could properly be called a “mixed media art, but not multimedia art.

I watched some tutorials on YouTube and I think it is something that I will enjoy creating. In those videos, I found out two of the main supplies are Gesso and Modeling Paste. Honestly, I still do not know yet the different betweet them since I have not yet seen them or used them in any of my projects in the past. Next time I make a trip to a craft store, I will get them just  to make sure I know the different 🙂

But for a start, I found couple tutorial how to make homemade Gesso and Modeling Paste.

My first mixed media project: Thank You Gift Tag. More about it on my blog: http://helengullett.com/?p=7939 | #mixedmedia #stamplorations #artplorations #fabercastell #gelatos #ctmh #cansonwatercolorpaper #watercoloring #stamping #coloring #gifttag #thankyoutag #thanksgiving #handmadE #diy #coffeelovingpapercrafters #coffeelovingcardmakers #homemadegesso #homemademodelingpaste

I tried this tutorial to make the homemade modeling/texture paste that using baby powder and here’s the recipe:

  • 1 1/2 cup Baby powder (it makes the paste smells so good!)
  • 1/2 cup of White acrylic paint / white acrylic gesso (you can also use black or color gesso/paint)
  • 1/4 cup of Mod Podge (matte)

I used baby powder from Target brand and I ended up adding a little bit more acrylic paint to make it softer to mix. It was a bit hard to mix. She suggested to start with the liquid first, then the powder to avoid lump. And store the paste in air-tight container.

And I also followed this tutorial and recipe that using baking soda for my first homemade gesso:

  • 1/2 cup of Baking Soda
  • 3 tablespoon White Glue (I used Mod Podge)
  • 2 tablespoon White Paint

I ended up to add a little bit more paint to make more consistency like on the video. I think what make the difference is that the brand of supplies we use. So if you wanna try this, I would suggest to start with the recipe and see if you like the result, if not then you can add more of the ingredient to make it better consistent to meet your need.

My oldest daughter was at home for Thanksgiving break and she helped me with mixing them. We had fun doing it together and messy for sure 😀

The best way to store the oaste is in an air-tight container and according to them, one batch can last for 6-10 months.

My first mixed media project: Thank You Gift Tag. More about it on my blog: http://helengullett.com/?p=7939 | #mixedmedia #stamplorations #artplorations #fabercastell #gelatos #ctmh #cansonwatercolorpaper #watercoloring #stamping #coloring #gifttag #thankyoutag #thanksgiving #handmadE #diy #coffeelovingpapercrafters #coffeelovingcardmakers #homemadegesso #homemademodelingpaste

I did a test right away. So, I cut a tag out of Canson watercolor paper (140 lbs). To create the background, I added some Gelatos on it and blended them with my finger and then using baby wipe I blended them more to give the watercoloring look. I speeded the drying with Craft Heater.

When the background tag dry completely, I added the modeling paste on it using a palete knife over Retro Circles – ARTplorations Stencil. It took a while to dry.

I stamped the stacking cups (Sketchy Coffee Cups – STAMPlorations) and sentiment (Literary Caffeine-anations – Big Grind by Becca Cruger, STAMPlorations) when the background completly dry.

I colored and added some shadow to the cups using the Mix & Match Stamper’s Big Brushes. I love the finished tag and really enjoy the process of making it.

I still have a lot to learn but this is a fun technique, making pretty mess for sure.

Stay Warm With A Cup Of Hot Drink

We got our first snow flurries this morning and the girls were super excited that it finally snowed. They love snow for sure. I my self love snow but not the cold 🙂

In the winter season, I keep myself warm enough. My favorite hot drinks are coffee, hot chocolate and green chinese tea. And it is the time to have them.

Today I like to share some cards I made in cold morning 🙂

image

This first card I created to enter:

On a piece of watercolor paper, I stamped the mugs from Mugs & Mittens stamp set (Concord & 9th) using Peacock Feather Mini Distress Ink. Then using slightly wet brush, I pulled the color from the lines. When they all dry completely, I stamped the decor on the mugs and sentiment from the same stamp set using Black Archival Ink.

I added Snowhaven paper for the background card and then added the stamped watercolor paper on it. Then I thought it still needed something, so I heat embossed the heart with Ranger™ White Super Fine Embossing Powder and fussy cut them. I added them on the mugs with 3D foam tape.

And the second card is pretty simple to make. I used the printable from Paper Issues. The pattern paper is from a fall team pad I found at Walmart. Then I added some twine with mini wooden clothespin.

I give thanks for hot drinks for sure! This card I link up at Paper Issues Link & Win – Let Me Espresso My Gratitude.

I hope you like my cards today and thank you for visiting 🙂

So, So, So, Blessed

Feather diecuts are from The Cut Shoppe. There are lots of pretty and cool cutting files there! Check them out 💕

I cut the feathers using my Silhouette Cameo. Then I dap some VersaMark ink on them and dipped them in the mix of Ranger Gold Embosing Powder, Ranger Silver Embossing Powder and Clear Glitter Embossing Powder (Darice).

Tree Ring background stamp set I used is from Concord and 9th, a new comer in the stamping world. I stamped the tree ring using Chocolate Exclusive Ink Pad with my MISTI stamping tool (love it!)

Sentiment stamp set is one of my Fall favorite sets from CTMH, Harvest Wreath. I stamped them using MISTI with VersaMark ink pad and added some Ranger White Embossing powder, then heat set it using my Craft Heater.

I finished it with twine from American Crafts.

Today, I link up my card at:

Thank You for stopping by today and have a fantastic weekend!

More Merry Christmas Cards

Today I am sharing more Christmas cards I made today catching up with my Christmas projects 🙂

First card is a one-layer card with only white heat-embossed images with some white paint splatter on it. I keep it clean and simple. The one-layer and CAS technique is one of the ways to mass-produce cards, especially during the Holiday.

Wishing You Peace, Love and Joy

I CASE-ing one of Amy Tsuruta’s Christmas Cards she made for Hero Arts recent blog hop. Check out her cards on her blog.

Second card is also a clean and simple card that I had so much fun making it. First I stamped the images with Black Archival Ink Pad and then colored them using Watercolor Pencils. Then, using Aquash Watercolor Brush, I wet them to give the watercolor effect. Let them dry and I though it will be fun to add some Liquid Glue on them to give some epoxy glass look 🙂

Merry Christmas Ornament Card

Check this out…. Fun isn’t it? 🙂

These two cards have no stamping on them. The backgrounds and sentiments are embossed using We R Memory Keepers Next Lever embossing folders and Word Strip embossing folders.

Merry Christmas Tree Card

I love the Next Level folders! They give deeper impression on the card. And the embossing strips are fabulous! Quick but cool way to add sentiment on the card.

Thank you for visiting and I hope you like them, too 🙂

Gratitude Bible Journaling Week 1

There are so many things we can thank God for. Big things, small things, everything that are good come from Him.

During the month of November, I join the Illustrated Faith Community to document our thanksgiving through journaling. They have the Gratitude Documented Journal sold at their Etsy store. But I did not get it on time to start this, I do my journaling on my ESV Journaling Bible 🙂

And here’s the list of promts provided for all of us to join their #GratitudeDocumented:

Illustrated Faith Community in #GratitudeDocumented http://www.illustratedfaith.com

I started on the first day and I did the first 2 pages (Day 1 and Day 2), but got stopped because of our kids got sick. Here are the other 4 of my Gratitude Bible Journaling pages from last Week 1.

Gratitude Documented Bible Journaling Day 3: Family. Joshua 24:14-15 #blessedfamily #biblejournaling #illustratedfaith #gratitudedocumented #latinacrafterstamps #beablessing #ctmh #fabercastell #gelatos #pittsartistpen #creatingjoyfully #LampAndLight

Day 3: Family.

Joshua 24:14-15

Never stop thanking God for my family. This is my prayer that we will serve Him as a family as long as we live. We will walk by faith, not by sight. We trust in Him and we entrust our lives in Him. For He is our God, Savior and Lord.

Gratitute Documented Bible Journaling Day 4: Passion. John 1:1-5 #illustratedfaith #gratitudedocumented #biblejournaling #latinacrafter #neatandtangled #beablessing #fabercastell #gelatos #pittsartistpens #stampersbigbrushpens #primamarketing #creatingjoyfully #lampandlight

Day 4: Passion

John 1:1-15

The passion God has put in my heart is that to see more SEA* people to have God’s word translated in languages that the people speak and they will be able to read His word in their heart languages, so that they will know who God is, that He is the Word, that He is the Creator, that He is the Life, and that He is the Light that shine in the darkness. And they will come to trust in Him, saved and serve Him. This is His passion.

Gratitute Documented Bible Journaling Day 5: Peace. Isaiah 9:1-7 #gratitudedocumented #illustratedfaith #biblejournaling #peace #PrinceofPeace #neatandtangled #pittsartistpens #gelatos #FaberCastell #creatingjoyfully #LampAndLight

Day 5: Peace.

Isaiah 9:1-7

Jesus Christ is the Prince of Peace, who was born, given and sent to us to govern over all rulers of the earth and heavens.

He rules with justice and righteousness. He is with us and in us.

He gives us the peace that the world cannot give us.

Gratitude Documented Bible Journaling Day 6: Forgiveness. 1 John 1:7-10 #illustratedfaith #gratitudedocumented #biblejournaling #latinacrafterstamps #beablessing #ctmh #FaberCastell #stampersbigbrushpens #pittsartistpens #eksuccesscalligraphypens #creatingjoyfully #LampAndLight

Day 6: Forgiveness.

1 John 1:7-10

We need Jesus to cleanse us with His blood.
Confession of our sins leads us to forgiveness, and God who is faithful will forgive us and heal us.

When I did the journaling, God encouraged my heart with His words. He strengthen my hope and faith in Him. So thankful for God’s word that speak into our lives!

Thank You for visiting and Have a wonderful blessed week!
